MSI Wind U100 set to ship soon

The demand for UMPCs (Ultra Mobile PCs) is on the rise and MSI is hoping the get a piece of that Asus Branded pie with the Wind U100 a fully equipped Asus Eee PC competitor.

MSI’s UMPC flagship sports the following specifications:

OS: Windows XP or Linux (your choice)
Processor: Intel Atom 1.6GHz
Motherboard: 945GMS + ICH7M chipsets.
RAM: unspecified atm but supports up to 2GB DDR2 667
Storage: 80GB 2.5” SATA HDD
LCD: 10” WSVGA 1024 x 600 widescreen
Other features: 1.3 MP camera, Bluetooth connectivity, Built-in Card readers

No word if the Wind PC will be carrying an Optical Drive but as is the current trend on UMPC’s I highly doubt it. The current pre-order price for $609.95 and like the EEE PC, I’m quite certain this will increase the moment units start appearing on shelves this June.

With no official tally of specifications though, consumers will want to know the average battery life of this baby. Sporting a larger, much brighter screen and a SATA Hard drive instead of SSD (Solid State Drive), I’m expecting 3 to 2.5 hours tops on the Wind PC which is roughly the same for the EEE 701’s big brother. It’s major turn off for some, but roughly acceptable for people who are used to just laptops with 1 hour’s worht of battery life like me.

Is it worth forking over the hefty price tag over Asus’ EEE 900? Performance-wise, I’d say yes. But to be safe, I’m holding judgment until the spec-list comes out. For now, my UMPC bet is with Deep Blue.

With some of the major brands sporting UMPCs, high price is usually the case. But take note that this is a performance notebook, not just a very portable one.
