Asus EEE 900 starts shipping May 12th
This is just a minor update to my earlier post, Facts about the EEE 900. A minor yet very important update. Asustek finally released the final shipping date and price for the United States of the EEE 700’s big brother.
According to NotebookReview the Asus Eee PC 900 sells for $549 and starts shipping on May 12th.
There’s no price variation for the Windows XP and the Linux package but there is a difference in terms of storage capacity. The Linux package has 20GB of flash and the Windows XP package has just 12GB. Why? Not it’s not that Asus is scrimping XP fans but rather as a way of curbing additional expenses in terms of Microsoft licenses, the company just dropped a full 8GB from the hard drive so they could maintain the $549 price tag for both models.
Interesting Marketing strategy if you asked me.
On the Philippine scene, the new model will cost an extra Php14,000 cost compared to it’s little brother the EEE 701 (goes around for Php19,000+). Pretty steep for a laptop in the Php30,000+ range but many people would still appreciate not for it’s power but it’s initial charm of simplicity and portability.
No word on when the Atom model will hit the market though and as a prudent buyer, I suggest to put off purchasing the 900 until the new unts roll out. You’ll not only get a faster processor but also get more juice out of the battery.
