AMD is heading for Netbook territory

October 12th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Netbooks

A case of too little too late?  Not quite.  In an open forum hosted by Cyberpress, an AMD representative confirms they will come out with a netbook-specific CPU in the comings months.

While there’s no specific date for the launch of a fully AMD-branded Netbook CPU, it was indicated that it could be within the quarter or early first quarter of next year. (Hence the too little too late punt).

AMD’s has been quite adamant with their position when it comes to the netbook, that it’s just a passing fad like those Tablet PCs that didn’t seem to take off.  This announcement is a complete turn around and a pleasant surprise for AMD fans to hear that company is developing the chipset for netbooks.

The issue isn’t simply production of AMD-labeled Netbook CPUs but rather getting another option out in the market.  More competition means more innovation.  Plus, the move seems quite necessary for AMD who has been lagging quite behind Intel after their success with the K6 processor line.

The likely candidate is this 1.0GHz CPU codenamed “BGA”:

AMD BGA CPU

Finally, an AMD Netbook

The proposed power usage at battery power is just 8watts (TDP).  I guess the make or break issue is what GPU will power the Netbook..
